Some people love theirs and some people hate theirs. Giving somebody a gift of their birthstone is a lovely thought after gift whether it be for a 16th or 21st birthday or Christmas. The fact that you looked up the persons birthstone and selected a relevant gift already shows that you put thought and effect into their gift.
There are birthstones by month, Zodiac Sign, Modern and traditional. So you have a variety of choices and when selecting a birthstone gift for yourself you can always choose another month if you prefer……………… Is this allowed you ask? Of course!!! The birthstone police are very leniant.
One can always select an item of jewellery with multiple stones in and one of them can be your birthstone. You also don’t wear the same item of jewellery every day so you can wear your birthstone once a month if you so feel. There are no set rules regarding birthstones and therefor make up your own story it’s your birth right. But before you say I hate the colour of my birthstone I want you to have a little more information.
What I am going to do month by month is give you varied information regarding your birthstone. Some you might relate to and some not. Everybody has their own individual taste, take books for instance. I like courtroom drama and you might prefer romance.
Almost every single gemstone found on earth is somebody’s birthstone.
If you like the colour wear it!!!
Who decided on birthstones?
Biblical Origins
The origins of this tradition can be traced all the way back to biblical times and the Book of Exodus. It describes the breastplate worn by Aaron, the first high priest of the Israelites, which was to be worn by all future high priests. The breastplate was adorned with 12 different stones, each representing one of the 12 tribes of Israel. These stones were said to have possessed real powers and had the ability to tell people their fate. It wasn’t until the fist century, around 500 years after Aaron’s breastplate was described in the Book of Exodus, where the historian Joseph believed there to be a connection between the 12 stones in Aaron’s breastplate, the 12 months of the year, and the 12 zodiac signs.
Hindu Roots
The tradition of stones representing your birth month with mystical powers can also be found in Hindu traditions, most likely influencing customs in the west as well. The Ratna Parksha, a 5th century Hindu text, chronicles the relationship between gemstones and deities, celestial bodies and days of the week.
Modern Traditions
Even though birthstones had already become an international trend rooted in centuries – long practice, there was still no consensus on the list of birthstones. That wasn’t until the year 1912, where the National Association of Jewelers met in order to officially standardize the list of American birthstones and each month that they represented.
