A 400-Million-Year-Old Survivor of the Ancient Seas
Size: 54mm x 37mm x 39mm Approximately
Weight: 67 gram
Step back in time to over 400 million years ago, when Earth’s oceans teemed with bizarre and fascinating life forms. This Authentic Morocops Trilobite, unearthed from the fossil-rich Issoumour region of Morocco, is a perfectly preserved relic of the Devonian period. Trilobites, one of Earth’s earliest complex life forms, were marine arthropods that thrived for an astonishing 270 million years before their mysterious extinction.
With a hard exoskeleton divided into three sections, a segmented body, and intricate compound eyes made of crystalline calcite, these creatures were well-adapted to their environment. They scuttled along the seafloor, using their jointed legs to sift through the sediment for food, possibly feeding on organic matter or small prey. As they grew, they would shed their exoskeletons, much like modern-day crabs and lobsters.
Though trilobites were incredibly successful for millions of years, they eventually met their fate during the Permian mass extinction—the most catastrophic extinction event in Earth’s history. Luckily, thanks to Morocco’s unique geological conditions, many of these extraordinary fossils have been remarkably preserved, allowing us to admire and study a true fragment of prehistoric time!
